Dr. Nelson received his bachelor of science in biology from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1996. He earned his M.D. from the Texas Tech School of Medicine in 2000.

Dr. Nelson was an intern in internal medicine from 2000 to 2001, at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.

Dr. Nelson served as resident physician in neurology at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, from 2001 to 2004.

Dr. Nelson is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the United Council for Neurologic Specialties, Headache Medicine and in Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Nelson has been in private practice with Fort Sanders Neurology Associates and Knoxville Headache Center, Knoxville, Tenn., from 2005 to 2009; he served as assistant professor, electromyography laboratory director and assistant residency program director for University of Texas Medical Branch from 2004 to 2005; and he served as anatomy lab teaching assistant for Bernell Dailey, Ph.D., Texas Tech University School of Medicine from 1997 to 1998, and as laboratory assistant for Robert McMahon, Ph.D., University of Texas at Arlington, Department of Biology, from 1995 to 1996.

Dr. Nelson is a member of the American Academy of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Headache Society, the International Headache Society, the American Association of Sleep Medicine, and the American Pain Society. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Interests include headache, electrodiagnostic medicine, sleep medicine, deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's Disease and stroke.
